: Lay down to sleep, went to bed. That he then fell asleep is a pretty safe assumption. SS

"Sack" is slang for bed, or wherever you lay your head to go to sleep. To "hit the sack" means go to bed, or lie down somewhere to sleep. A sleeping bag is literally a sack, so perhaps there's a connection. SS
