Death spiral. Circling the drain. Follow a bad shot with a dumb shot. (Golf.) (Specifically, my normal golf mentality.) In quicksand. In a quagmire. (Quagmire is the word usually invoked when describing a foolish step into a bad situation that only grows worse as you get deeper in the mud. It was/is often used in connection with the U.S. involvement in Viet Nam; years from now it will be used in connection with the U.S. cowboy invasion of Iraq.
