This phrase seemed to have evolved from the earlier "Fry in ones own grease". Chaucer, in line 487 of The Prologe of the Wyves Tale of Bathe, has "in his owene grece I made him fry" (see [Dead link removed - ed], p. 101). Answers.com says the phrase you asked about dates from the second half of the 1800s. Not the most complete response, but I thought this had been sitting unanswered for a bit. (GC)
