:OED has it in use from 1930[U.S]and in Australia I have commonly heard as "full as a goog[sl.= egg]".I think it may safely be said that an egg is very full and the drunk idea may relate to how sensative an egg is to spewing out its contents,in the human analogy either literally or figuratively.Only a guess.
