The thick of thin things

I'm interested in the origin of the phrase "getting caught up in the thick of thin things." Seems like a clever build from "thick and thin."

Guessing. Being in the thick of things means being where the action is, heavily involved in what's going on. But maybe what's going on is of little importance.
