Working on irons

"I'm working on irons today." What does that mean? Where did it come from?

Without more context, I'm going to say that he's playing golf and concentrating on improving his short game. In golf, you have longer clubs called woods (or driver) and the other clubs are called irons. See: en.wikipedia.org/ wiki/Golf_club_%28equipment%29
