: Is the origin of the phrase "fighting fund" connected with the ""military" meaning of the word "fight", or with its general meaning of "struggle"?

If you have to pick one, it's "struggle." Actually, "fighting funds" are more often than not designed to fight legal battles. The goal is to provide protection, especially legal, to a group that the association with the fund considers to be in need of protection. This could be eagles, Irish miners, socialist politicians, virginity, or any other cause with a perceived need for protection.
