: : What is the origin of the phrase "a sack of lies"?
: It's not a common phrase (a Google search found only 133 uses) nor a particularly novel way to phrase a common thought. It's gained a bit of prominence lately, as Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, a "powerful figure in the Vatican on matters of Church doctrine," denounced the DaVinci Code, a work of fiction, as a "sack of lies." Duh. Other uses include a variety of other hotheads denouncing propaganda they don't agree with.
"Pack of lies" I have heard.
