: BBC 7 today (7.3.2006) broadcast a Goons episode first heard 11.10.1956. It was Drums Across the Mersey'.Spike Milligan's script contained the words 'never had it so good'. Macmillan famously used the expression in a speech on 20.7.1957. Was Mac (or his speechwriter) a Goon's fan?

The short answer is no. It's a very common expression in English. I don't know how far back it goes, but I'd guess at least a couple of hundred years. They have even heard it in the boonies of the U.S.A. SS
