Grab a root and growl

My dad said stuff like "Grab a root and growl " Id like to know what it all means

It seems to mean 2 things.
Some people say it to mean to sit down and have something to eat and some other people use the phrase to urge someone not to give up and to keep on trying and don't get all sad at not succeeding at something.
