Needle match

Needle match between London and Paris continues over Olympic bid (headline: July 4, 2005.)

And "needle match" means??

Adjusting a compass incrementally to match the north notch or needle is creating a needle match.

It may mean something that is very close to each other as the needle pointing north is needing usually a very slight movement to bring it to true north.
