"... and counting"

What do you mean when you say "... and counting"? Instead of dots usually comes a number.

It means the number is rising (or falling); it is not a fixed number, and the trend seems likely to continue.
It is usually said in response to a surprisingly large result. You expected 10 people to accept an invitation, but you have gotten 27 ... and counting.
