: I've heard this a couple of times from different people. When someone is overlooked or left out they say, "What am I, Greek?" I would say it is the equivalent of, "What am I, invisible?" I want to know if I understand it correctly and why "Greek" is used. Are Greeks invisible or persecuted?
"What am I, black?" is more commonly heard among certain groups of whites. I guess you'd have to live in a predominantly Turkish area for the "Greek" version to mean the same thing.
