: I would be very grateful if anyone can tell me the origin of this proverb.
:: I don't know the absolute origin, but it was well-known in the Middle Ages in Latin - "Mori potius quam foedari". Several noble families had this as their motto, and it was the motto of the 46th Regiment of infantry, the Regiment de Bretagne, in the army of ancien regime France (i.e. before 1789).
