Just wondered if anyone could tell me what the phrase 'old habits die hard' means?

If you've been doing something for a long time, it is difficult to stop. Another way of saying it: old habits are hard to break.

If a person has been smoking for 20 years, it is more difficult for him to quit than it is for someone who has just taken up the habit.
