Heights & lows

Does anyone know what this phrase means "if I lose the heights,at least I'm spread the lows"?

It should be "spared the lows." A person who avoids extreme risks won't enjoy great triumphs; as compensation, the person won't suffer great disasters.

It sounds like something a manic-depressive might say about the drawbacks and benefits of taking their Prozac.
