I'd always guessed it meant something like 'taken care of' - is "TKO" a common acronym and if so what does it stand for?

It's from boxing: Technical Knockout. (That is, the referree's decision to end a bout when a boxer has been knocked senseless, but doesn't have the prudence to topple over.)
