The last post is closest to the meaning.
It refers to the classic arguments with a baseball referee. He wears a helmet with a face-protecting grille, as he is standing right behind the batter and having balls thrown at him.... a very dangerous place to be. If a coach disagrees with his judgement, they often wind up screaming at each other from mere inches away. There are two reasons for this: 1) to really make your point, and 2)the intracasies of sports regulation is difficult to discuss over the noise of a roaring and excitable crowd.
