The whole nine yards

Don't know how old the phrase is, but I've heard it since my childhood in late fifties/early sixties. I was told it referred to the amount of dirt or gravel carried by the average dump truck; a work order to empty the entire cargo would be to dump 'the Whole nine yards'.
