The connection is in the Greek root ky-klos, or cyclos, meaning circle. The encyclopedia attempt to present the whole circle (or compass) of arts and sciences for the education of the young. And our one-eyed friend? The monster cyclops has one (round) eye. Cycl - ops. Other relatives included bicycle, encyclical, cyclotron...
