: : : Has anyone heard of the phrase "making the gate for" as in the concept of opening the door for or some such thing?

: : I haven't. But if you don't mind my asking, Leanne, what type of project are you working on? You and your colleagues have asked about a number of odd-sounding phrases and I just thought it would help us all out to know a little background. Is it a translation of a book from a foreign language into English, or a transcription of audio tapes, etc.? There are a number of queries posted by translators on this site from time to time, and sometimes it helps (and makes it interesting) to know the context.

: Dear Brian, no problem with you asking at all. Myself and colleagues are writing glossaries from transcriptions of audio tapes delivered in the 1950s through 1960s. The tapes contain a very large and wide-ranging vocabulary of diverse subjects, hence the variety of phrases being looked for. Leanne

I thought it was something like that! Thanks for the response, and good luck in your endeavor.
