In this neck of the woods

Please clarify the saying in this neck of the woods.
I was told this originated from when people would make avenue through the woods to a point deeper in the woods where they would make a clearing for a house or a village, so if they met some one on the way to the village, they might say I have not met you in this neck of the woods.
