'root', as in to cheer on

Posted by Word Camel on April 29, 2004

I was using this in sentence today and realised I have no idea how it is spelled. I tried looking it up - admittedly at and couldn't find a definition that fits the way I'm using the word under 'root' or the eve more unlikely 'route'. Does anyone know which spelling is correct? I'd be interested in knowing the origin of it too since it doesn't seem to have been noted in the dictionary.

Thanks in advance everyone.
