We did not get "Indian-giver" from American Indians (who prefer not to be called "native-Americans" since they are not native to this land, said well as "What, descended from the mammoth?"), but from our perception of American-Indians. That is like saying we got "Dutch-courage" or "[word removed in order to comply with Google's Publisher Policy]-rich" from the dutch or blacks.
