Ah, now that's cynicism about romance...

: : : : Thought I'd post this topic up again since we seen to be getting flooded with unasked-for information - well-meaning, I am sure, but not desperately appropriate.
: : : : I also found the page in Japanese that ESC referred to, but somewhere in its html, the following line of English verse is written:-
: : : : "A lover's moon soars clear and bright, guiding true love throught(through the? throughout? through t'?) night.
: : : : But a liar's moon lurks misty and gray, scheming to drive true love away."
: : : : I have no idea if this is a regional saying from somewhere in the English-speaking world, or a line of published verse, but I thought it was worth posting in case it can be tracked down.
: : : Yes, that's the page I saw. I've found a lot of moon name pages. But no "liar's moon" so far.
: : I bet it's a Hollywood invention. Who else would be so cynical about love?
: H.L. Mencken, George Bernard Shaw, Peter Ustinov, Ernest Hemingway ... many, MANY people!
: "Love is the triumph of imagination over intelligence." - H. L. Mencken
: "When two people are under the influence of the most violent, most insane, most delusive, and most transient of passions, they are required to swear that they will remain in that excited, abnormal, and exhausting condition continuously until death do them part." - George Bernard Shaw
: "I can see from your utter misery, from your eagerness to misunderstand each other, and from your thoroughly bad temper, that this is the real thing." - Peter Ustinov
: "If two people love each other there can be no happy end to it." - Ernest Hemingway
Which is an entirely different thing - and probably quite healthy.
Except for that Hemingway quote which might be just be right. Casablanca (and yes, I appreciate the irony that this was a Hollywood movie, though based on the play "Everybody Goes to Rick's") is a case in point. It's never a truly great love story if there's happy ending. :)
