I don't know how long the webmaster will allow us to roam this far from the topic, but before we get shut down, I have one more digressive comment. Yesterday I attended a lecture in Berkeley by Richard Dawkins, the eminent biologist and Professor of the Public Understanding of Science at Oxford University. His writings are another treat for those who love language (and clear thinking). In response to questions about the pitiful state of
science education in the U.S. and the stance of our current leadership on environmental issues, Dawkins told his largely American audience that the English public is not so well informed about science either. One third of the British population doesn't know the earth goes around the sun. A large percentage believe humans coexisted with dinosaurs. He said: "In England we have idiots and fanatics too--but they don't go into politics."
