Interestingly, the ceremonial "first pitch" had its birth the same day. President Taft, all 330 pounds of him, was encouraged to make some sort of display to prove that he was, although large, perfectly capable of running the country. An aide suggested he make a pitch from the mound to the plate before the game. And thus, two traditions were born on the same day.
