It was said of my Grandfather, who ruled all with a rod of iron and dispensed his justice without fear or favour, that he used to be much worse until grandma dragged him, kicking and screaming, into the 17th century. We always wondered where he'd started his journey to civilisation and what impediments had prevented him arriving at the same place as everybody else.
