1. Eventually the story began to "tumble out".
2. The man started to "pour out a tale about" someone.

Both 1 & 2 -- a person is talking so rapidly that the words seem to tumble or pour out of his or her mouth.

3. When all "the hell broke loose." Things began to happen in a fast and chaotic manner.

4. When he "collected his wits." He took time to calm down and think in a rational manner.

5. He attended the university for a semester, but "flunked out." He got bad grades, F's. It could be he was kicked out of school or left on his own.
