: I have been using the following phrase: "as rich as a Nazi" for a few years now. I first heard it when I lived in Cambridge and am unsure whether it originated from the brain of my old manager, whether it is from media of some sort, or whether it dates to WWII. It is used when someone is displaying overt wealth, e.g. a person has purchased 5 porsches - that person must be as rich as a Nazi! I presume Nazis are considered rich as they nicked everyones stuff and snaffled it away in Swiss bank vaults. Has anybody else heard of this phrase?
I've lived all my life in London and SE England, and I've never heard it. FWIW, even though the Nazis nicked a lot of my family's stuff, it sounds odd to me: I would never assume that Nazis individually were rich. (VSD)
