: : re: "A rolling stone gathers no moss"
: : The name of the band (Rolling Stones) is NOT from the late Brian Jones thinking of this phrase. Rather, it is a tribute to bluesmen Muddy Waters and Willie Dixon from a line in their song "I'm a Man": "I'm a rolling stone . . . "

: But didn't Muddy Waters get the line in the song from the proverbial phrase? If so, it is the same origin, just one step removed.

: I can't speak to that; quite possible, but the line before -- I'm a natural born lover's man -- and following -- "I'm a hoochie coochie man" -- make me think it to be more than just a step removed, especially since it was the Stones' affinity for American blues music that was at their core.
