Could be an old surveying term: Meaning 8 furlongs.(8 furlongs to 1 statute mile)
The statute mile was defined by an English Act of Parliament during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I - is equal to 1,760 yards ). For surveying, the statute mile is divided into eight furlongs. (KT)
