Google finds the phrase in Motteux's circa 1822 translation of Don Quixote:
"to try whether absence, the common cure of love, would relieve him, and mitigate his pain."

It is important to note that Cervantes did not say that. He said:
"por ver si usaba con él la ausencia de sus ordinarios fueros"
which is more closely translated in the John Ormsby translation as:
"to try if absence would act with him as it is wont"
