You mean it wasn't made up by Gil Grissom? Too bad, then we would know the author. According to one Internet source, it's an "old Russian proverb." Another Website gives it in Rumanian. Mostly it's just an old proverb. So far, I havent seen it attributed to Confucius. I guess I haven't tried hard enough.

Unless we can capture the original author, which is extremely unlikely, I don't think we can determine a single correct way of stating the proverb. If you chase two rabbits, you'll catc neither. Or you'll lose both. There seems not to be a canonical second clause.
