The phrase in question actually dates back a lot further - a member of the ancient clan de Brus, (from the area now known as Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland) had in 1274 sought refuge in a local cave and had observed a spider trying and failing to climb its web...on its 7th attempt, it was succesful, inspiring the clansman to continue the battle outside the cave's walls...
