It would apply whenever a person has to choose between doing what's right and doing what will make people think well of him or her. Examples might come from many areas of life, including politics (when a legislator must decide how to vote on a measure, for instance) and business (should an employee blow the whistle on a company's unethical or illegal behavior?). ~rb
