Baseball gripped me

I am trying to recall a baseball phrase which says something to the effect of:

"When I first learned to play, I gripped the ball, but in the end, baseball gripped me".

I am putting together a collage of photos for my son now that he has finished his baseball playing days and want to use this phrase as the headline.
