: Are these phrases interchangeable?
: 1. On one's beam ends
:
: 2. swing for the fences
Not even remotely close.
If you're on your beam ends, you are in a bad spot like a boat on its side. When you swing for the fences, you set yourself a high goal, like a batter in baseball trying to hit a homerun.
