: Where do we get the phrase "making love"? How did it originate?

We got it at the getting place. Go there and you'll get one too. But anyway...

Making love -- Lyly's Euphues. "Wordsworth Book of Euphemism" by Judith S. Neaman and Carole G. Silver (Wordsworth Editions, Hertfordshire, 1995). Page 245.

To caress and kiss. To copulate. Both before the 1600s. "Slang and Euphemism: A Dictionary of Oaths, Curses, Insults, Ethnic Slurs, Sexual Slang and Metaphor, Drug Talk, College Lingo and Related Matters" by Richard A. Spears (New American Library, Penguin Putnam, New York, Third Edition, 2001) Page 220.

However, in Bette Davis' movies it meant romancing rather than copulation.
