: The other day I saw a documentary about the band The Fall. One scene showed them in front of a poster displaying a phrase - 'The most uncomfortable truth is a safer companion than the most pleasant falsehood'. Does anyone know who said this?

I found it in a book by Theodore Roosevelt, but it sounds like he's quoting, or repeating a truism. There may be an older source. See
