Buttering their bread

: what is the meaning of 'they are buttering their bread', or 'buttering your bread'. I am assuming that it means that 'they' are taking advantage.

It's hard to say without more context. Possibly it means about the same thing as "They are lining their pockets." They're acting so as to get something extra for themselves. If they're buttering YOUR bread, they're doing you a favor.
