: Your daughter's teachers are correct. This is a proverb, because it contains a piece of traditional wisdom. However, if you just used "early bird" as a synonym for "early riser" or "someone who gets to an event before anybody else" that would only be an idiom, because it doesn't contain the statement that the full proverb does.
