: : The difference between proverbs and idioms: My daughters' teachers says that "The early bird catches the worm" is a proverb, not an idiom. The internet lists it either as a proverb or an idiom. Who is right?
: Your daughter's teachers are correct. This is a proverb, because it contains a piece of traditional wisdom. However, if you just used "early bird" as a synonym for "early riser" or "someone who gets to an event before anybody else" that would only be an idiom, because it doesn't contain the statement that the full proverb does.
