"What am I, Greek?"

I've heard this a couple of times from different people. When someone is overlooked or left out they say, "What am I, Greek?" I would say it is the equivalent of, "What am I, invisible?" I want to know if I understand it correctly and why "Greek" is used. Are Greeks invisible or persecuted?
