Medlars (nisperos in Spanish, nespres in Catalan)are on sale in Spain every year for a very short season in, I think, June, and never seem to be stored for sale out of season. I've never seen them on sale in England.
To make jelly or jam from fruit you don't use gelatin, you add pectin if the fruit hasn't got enough itself to make it set. Apples, for example, contain lots of pectin and set well. A jelly in this sense is a strained and clear jam because the solids have been removed.
