Priests

But the point was, if a person spends very much time close to something that is purported to be supernatural, that person will realize that there is no magic there afterall. Or that he/she will lose his reverence or awe for the [tabernacle or whatever it was].

If that were my phrase, I'd substitute "altar boys" for "priests". The priests are the ones in charge, and who would presumably want to maintain the mystique.
