Crunchy

Hello

I have a difficulty to be accurate with this word in
this particular contex:

"One of the main concerns is that the bones over his forehead feel a bit *crunchy* and we think quite possibly he's got some skull fractures there."

Do you think it refers to the touch, and what other word can be placed instead of crunchy?
