: I don't know about British TV, but much of local television news in the U.S. is inane. Today the news person was talking about a mother who beat her three children in the head with a rock -- killing two and maining the third. It was a "sad situation," the news person said. "And this rainy weather is a sad situation."

: I don't even know what to say about comparing the murder of three children with a rainy day.

Here in Detroit, on our local TV news, whenever anything bad happens, it is called a "Senseless Tragedy".

Well, you know, some tragedies do make sense. For example, if a lunatic kills several people, it is a tragedy for sure, but it certainly makes sense: the person was a lunatic. Lunatics will sometimes kill people.

I think using 'senseless tragedy' for any sad situation is plain lazy writing and verbal vomit.
