: One of the meanings of 'barrel' is 'the trunk of a four legged animal: the barrel of a horse'. I reckon this could well be the origin. Others will no doubt comment!

I always thought it was from the barrel of a gun--the metal, cylindrical part of a firearm through which the bullet travels.
