: Family Planning is what you are trying to do; birth control is how you are trying to do it, generally. Birth control is the spacing of births by means of devices, chemicals and strategic abstinence. But family planning can include the decision to avoid birth control until after the first baby, or the decision to seek parenthood by one means or another when infertility is a factor.
