: I know nothing of an idiomatic meaning for "late hit," but I believe that when used in regard to Gray Davis it refers to the fact that when he was elected governor in a real election, he began to slash Riordan close to the date of the Republican primary, hoping to wound him so badly that Republicans would nominate the more easily defeated Simon as their candidate. It worked.
